I feel that one of the most important elements of effective online communication is to make sure that the message being delivered is clear and gets everyone in the group on the same page about a topic. Regardless of which methods are used the message should be consistent and easy to interpret. I think that students appreciate a safe, structured environment and effective use of online communication is an important aspect of establishing that. Ineffective communication can make an online learning environment feel fragmented and distant, effective communication can make the environment feel connected and supportive. If everyone in a group is on the same page is much easier to work together towards a common goal.

So true, Jeff. Funnily enough, I find that my communication with my DL students is actually pretty good and meeting the needs of both my students and their families. It's my online communication with teachers in my role as the district's PD Chair that has been pretty challenging. I've been working hard to make sure my emails are short and sweet (I tend to write long ones), and I also post information on Facebook, Twitter, and the PD website; however, sometimes I feel like my message is sent out into a vacuum...is anyone even reading it? Ha ha!! I think your point about having multiple methods of engagement is important because not everyone is comfortable with social media or checks their email regularly, etc. I also send information out through school PD Reps during staff meetings, etc. so I know that there is some face to face communication, too. It's complicated, isn't it?
